How My Bullet Journal Reflects My Personality.
In 2018 I think it’s plain to see I’m just as bullet journal obsessed as ever and I know I’m not the only one. If anything, I am using it more and more and for a wider variety of things and it’s really got me thinking about what it says about me.
It’s like a journal as well as an organizer these days full of snippets of my day, my mood as well as my plans and chores. It’s fuller than ever, I’m working through it quicker than ever and it’s a home for all my scribbles and doodles. I work out my blog there, I plan my day there, I pack for my holidays there and I remember my pals birthday’s there.
I have come to realise that my bullet journal is a true reflection of me, my personality and my character and now I’ve started noticing it I can’t unsee it.
It’s organised;
My bullet journal, especially in 2018, is well organised. For the first time I properly planned out my pages, starting logically and working my way through them in a system. I wrote them down in pencil first and then rearranged page by page until I was happy with the system. Birthdays are followed by the calendars, habit trackers are followed by the goals I want to hit. Blog post ideas are followed by my content schedule and to do lists are followed by weekly spreads. It’s logical, it makes perfect sense, it follows a system and it’s well organised.
Similarly, in my life I am organization queen. I very rarely leave anything until the last minute unless it’s out of my control and I like to know where I am and what I’m doing. I plan in advance, I don’t like spur of the moment things or surprises and my mind is racing at all times with what I have to do and when I have to do it. Event to go to next month? I’ve already got my travel planned, my outfit sorted, meal times considered and a contingency plan in place for if it goes tits up.
It’s thorough.
Minimalist is NOT the word you’d use to describe my bullet journal by any means. I was 70 pages into my 2018 bujo before I’d even started with January’s weekly spread and if you think you might need it, chances are I’ve got it in my journal. Master shopping list? Got it. Packing list? All over that. Abs challenge? Nailed it. My journal is thorough and my weekly spreads are no different, full of chores, menial tasks, the smallest of reminders and everything that’s ever in my head at one given time.
Personally, I try to be thorough with everything I’m doing and it stems from my need to be organised. Sure loads of people are organised, they have a diary with their dates in so they don’t double book or they have a google docs calendar on their phone. I have a wall calendar, a bullet journal AND an online diary and it’s not just dates and plans. It’s when to post birthday cards - of which I have a drawer full at all times just in case. It’s what time train I have to catch – and a list of it’s stops so I know when mine is coming up and whether or not we’re running late. You catch my drift.
It’s neat.
My bullet journal is all handwritten, purely in capitals – a piece of handwriting I didn’t know I liked until I perfected mine. It’s all fineline black pen, designed headers, carefully illustrated and thought out. I map my pages out with care, I box everything in, I take pride in those straight lines and throw a wobbly when one wobbles. Whenever other people see my bullet journal whether that be in person or online in blog posts they always comment on how neat it is.
At home I think maybe my boyfriend would dispute how neat I am if we’re talking tidy. I can leave the house go a few days with some dishes here and there and a pile of clothes on ‘the clothes chair’ (everybody has one don’t @ me). But eventually, say on day 3 or 4 I throw my hands up in the air with a “I HATE THIS HOUSE” and have a mass tidying session and a clean. Everything has a place, everything has a home and a specific slot and I do like it to be neat and tidy when I’m not being a slob. In work though I like everything to be neat and I absolutely cannot stand to work in a messy environment – and then my illustrating style is pretty neat too.
It’s creative.
Being an illustrator you’d be miffed if my bullet journal wasn’t creative wouldn’t you? I take genuine pleasure in making my bujo look cute so I fill it with illustrated banners, headers, doodles and borders. I hate blank space in my journal so if I have the bad luck of finding myself with them I tend to fill it with some illustrations or at least a little star or two. My journal has always been purely black and white, something I never thought I’d stray from but lately I’ve been doing my weekly spreads in colour and I love it more than ever – idk maybe it’s the brightness of the journal turning my head.
Naturally in life I am a pretty creative person too – I draw for a living and blog on the side so I doubt it’s come as a shock to you. As well as my job I also tend to live a creative life anyway. I consider myself one of those people who sees the little things in life – the way the sun breaks through the trees in a forest, the colours of the rooftops of houses, the way someone looks at someone they love. I think it’s commonly known as the artists eye in me and also means I have the ability to look at a scene and imagine how it’d look through a camera or with the right crop.
